Mid Term Exam

Part 1

1. “Egypt was a resurrection factory.” Explain this statement and show how the concept of death and the afterlife profoundly influenced the beliefs and cultural system of the Ancient Egyptians. Be sure to include the seven stages of the soul in your discussion.

2. Use the Epic of Gilgamesh and Flo Rida’s “Get Low” to show how early civilizations represented and created their understandings of nature into their stories. Use Sumerian architecture to show that the elements in the story are part of their material culture.

3.Defend or reject the Afrocentric argument in regards to the legacy of Ancient Greece and its relation to the concept of Western Civilization. Be sure to include counterarguments to your position (i.e. Dead White Eurocentric Males (Camille Paglia) vs. Martin Bernal and Black Athena).


Part 2

1. Demonstrate why the way in which Pericles’ Funeral Oration is positioned in The Peloponnesian Wars allows one to understand Thukydides conception of the rise and fall of Athens. After that explanation discuss where you consider the United States to be positioned in its rise and fall and tell me who you believe our Pericles to be.

2. Did the thoughts of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle cause the downfall of Athens are were they the response to Athens’ failed policies? In the course of your answer be sure to explain what each philosopher believed and how that impacted the others.

3. Use the words of the Iliad to show how the ancient Greek concept of arête was used as a means to settle a dispute. You may use relevant scenes from the movie Troy in your answer.


Part 3

1.Discuss the ways in which the foundation myth of Romulus and Remus demonstrates the character and personality of the citizens of the Roman Republic, the history of the early republic and the geographical importance of Rome as a city.

2. Did Caesar destroy the republic or enhance the empire? Show how one person’s life can influence a civilization.


3. Why did Rome fall? Was it inevitable or did it fall at all?
